About the Artist
Slightly Subversive's first Resident Artist, Chrissa Star is a Seattle-based painter and illustrator working across multiple mediums: encaustic, acrylic, charcoal, pastel, and ink. A fixture in the Seattle art scene for over two decades, her figurative paintings and drawings merge symbolism and abstract expressionism, with the artist citing Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele as major influences. Her works often depict and celebrate diverse women with an alluring hint of mystery: hidden secrets, stories, and traumas.
Star's artistic process is extremely hands-on and experimental, ranging from the use of craft materials like hammered nails, broken glass, and glitter, to blowtorching and chemical testing on batches of homemade encaustic wax. This fearless approach yields uniquely bold, colorful works such as her new abstract encaustic series commissioned by Slightly Subversive and featured in our record label releases. A psychedelic journey across the color spectrum, these small pieces are available as collectible framed originals or as larger giclée prints through our gallery and print shop.
